Percona Live Conference Recommendations

Percona Live MySQL Conference and Expo, April 22-25, 2013

While many attendees are repeat offenders, if 2013 is your first MySQL conference and you are relatively new with MySQL (say < 2 years experience), it can be daunting to determine which of the 8 or more concurrent sessions you should attend during the conference.

Here are my top recommendations that give you a good grounding in the various conference topics and a wealth of experience from known MySQL authorities, on important topics.

  1. A backup today saves you tomorrow by Ben Mildred at Pythian. Losing your data is a terrible experience. Learn what is needed to keep your data safe and you system highly available.
  2. Survey of Percona Toolkit: Command-Line tools for MySQL by Daniel Nichter at Percona. There are a wealth of additional MySQL tools that any resource should be familiar with. These are some of the most popular.
  3. Script It. Make Professional DBA tools out of nothing by Giuseppe Maxia at Continuent. I seasoned expert in the MySQL field, his expertise is invaluable to learn how to use MySQL effeciently. Giuseppe is also the creator of MySQL Sandbox, a huge productivity tool for developers.
  4. Practices for reducing MySQL database size by Yoshinori Matsunobu at Facebook. This is a consulting technique I use for great advantage with clients to improve performance. Yoshinori is also one of the most popular technical speakers at events.
  5. MHA: Getting started and moving past the quirks by Colin Charles at Monty Program. Creating a HA environment is essential for any successful application. MHA is one open source approach that should be considered.
  6. Managing data and data archiving using MySQL 5.6 new features of portable tablespace and exchange partition by Marco tusa at Pythian. If there was one footnote feature in MySQL 5.6 that has a huge benefit, this is the feature. As data continues to grow rapidly in size, archiving is more important.

This year’s conference talks are organized by topic and skill level. This can also help you find talks specific to your needs. Topics include the following:

  • Developing Applications
  • Tools
  • Best Practices for Businesses
  • Database Administration
  • Utilizing Hardware
  • Replication and High Availability Strategies
  • Treads in Architecture and Design
  • New Features

2013 is sure to be a great event, with a lineup of many MySQL product features for the MySQL ecosystem.

MySQL now has two user conferences (*)

PC World has written a post with this title(*) about the upcoming MySQL Connect conference and references the Percona Live conference and an official Percona comment. As this is not syndicated in Planet MySQL I encourage you to read the full article.

This is the MySQL conference to get technical presentations by the many great Oracle/MySQL technical staff who will not be in attendance at Percona Live. There will also be a strong community presence in speaking at Oracle Connect in September. While Oracle was organizing a dedicated MySQL event in April for the community with all vendors including Percona to replace the conference dropped by long term partner O’Reilly (kudos for many years of great events), Percona decided to go at it without including Oracle, the owners and developers of MySQL. The statement quoted in the PC World article regarding “lack of momentum around the [annual community] event” is clearly inaccurate and not a true representation of actual events.

It is difficult to keep up with all the community events Oracle is now running including multiple OTN MySQL Developer days per month across the US and Europe. I will be speaking at the upcoming OTN NY event in April, the Rocky Mountain Training Day in May, and hopefully the MySQL Innovation day in June. Get the full list at Upcoming MySQL Events.

Indeed MySQL content and presentations have also been represented at Oracle Open World for a number of years. 2011 was a very large turnout and many MySQL presentations. As a senior consultant for MySQL Inc I manned a MySQL booth at OOW exhibition hall back in 2007, prior to both Sun and Oracle acquisitions.

MySQL conference schedule

I am one of the crazy individuals(*) that will be speaking at both the regular O’Reilly MySQL Conference and the IOUG Collaborate conference both being held in the second week of April. My 4 presentations are:

Common MySQL Scalability Mistakes

This week I was one of the presenters at the first Surge Scalability Conference in Baltimore. An event that focused not just on one technology but on what essential tools, technologies and practices system architects need to know about for successfully scaling web applications.

While MySQL is an important product in many environments, it is only one component for a successful technology stack and for many organizations is one of several products that manage your data.

My presentation was on the common MySQL scalability mistakes and how to avoid them. This is a problem/solution approach and is a companion talk with Successful MySQL Scalability which describes design for successfully scalability from the ground up.

MySQL South America tour

DISCLAIMER: This post contains no technical MySQL content however it is good news for the MySQL Community.

MySQL content will be included for the first time with the LAOUC (Latin American Oracle Usergroups Council) Oracle tour that is being organized in conjunction with OTN (Oracle Technology Network).

I have no idea what MySQL user communities are in South America however if you live in any of the following cities, please feel free to contact me. I am happy to have additional discussion regarding MySQL or help in some way if there is interest in any cities.

This seven country tour includes:

  • Oct 12 – Lima, Peru
  • Oct 14 – Santiago, Chile
  • Oct 16 – Montevideo, Uruguay
  • Oct 18 – São Paulo, Brazil
  • Oct 20 – Bogota, Colombia
  • Oct 22 – Quito, Ecuador
  • Oct 25 – San Jose, Costa Rica

More details on the specific locations in each city will be available when finalized.

I would be very happy if anybody wants to translate this to Spanish or Portuguese for readers in South America.

Speaking at Oracle Open World 2010

I will be one of 18 MySQL speakers at Oracle Open World 2010 at the first ever MySQL Sunday. With a great diversity of technical, community and product talks this will be a great opportunity to get a cross section of MySQL content. Combined with Java One, this year’s Oracle Open World will include a lot more opportunity of technical and developer content then the more regular marketing material.

As the program chair for the first dedicated MySQL track at last month’s ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2010 our MySQL community now includes a larger number of target people. From the Oracle community come many highly technical and skilled resources, some with an understanding or appreciation of MySQL and many that are new to MySQL.

This is a great opportunity to share our knowledge and experience with MySQL.

The MySQL community impacting the Oracle community

I’m happy to announce that the MySQL community has been given the opportunity to speak at the upcoming Oracle Developer Tools User Group (ODTUG) Kaleidoscope conference in Washington DC. We will be releasing more details this week of the MySQL presentations and topics and we are finalizing details of possible options to include the local MySQL community during the event.

The various independent Oracle User Groups in North America that embody “by the community and for the community” have been very positive with including the MySQL community. With the Sun/MySQL now Oracle community team of Giuseppe Maxia, Lenz Grimmer, Kaj Arnö and Oracle ACE Directors Sheeri K Cabral and myself we have been happy with the openness and willingness to include us in the larger Oracle ecosystem.

We’ll announce the schedule when we finalize it, but we have had a great response from an impressive list of speakers.

The Blue Pill or the Red Pill

At the recent FOSDEM 2010 event, I presented in my keynote Dolphins, now and beyond a option which I termed the “Blue Pill” or the “Red Pill”. The following slide produced noticed interest in a packed room, and subsequent conversation.

While the ownership of MySQL has changed, the option between MySQL and Oracle as a product for use still remains. While MySQL is the most popular for modern online applications, Oracle continues to have the widely used enterprise database product and has a large number of Oracle DBAs in the IT marketplace.

Over the past 5 years I have presented a number of topics on MySQL for Oracle DBA’s. At the upcoming MySQL Users Conference 2010 I will be presenting the first two talks in my new series “MySQLCamp for the Oracle DBA”.

  • IGNITION – is the preparation necessary for a successful launch of a MySQL ecosystem for an Oracle DBA. This volume covers the preparation needed to be ready for ongoing production administration of MySQL.
  • LIFTOFF – Only after a successful preparation covered in IGNITION can you be ready for the implementation and management of a MySQL ecosystem and a successful launch of your product.

Speaking at MySQL UC 2010

My talk on 10x performance improvements – A case study has just been approved for the 2010 MySQL Conference. This will be my 5th straight year speaking at the MySQL conferences. For those in Europe wanting a sneak peek I am also speaking at FOSDEM 2010 in Brussels on Feb 7th where I’ll be giving an abridged version.

As an independent MySQL consultant, my work generally covers performance tuning and scalability and sometimes database architecture. Often however my work involves a review of a given problem and recommendations (immediate, short and long term). I’m rarely involved in the full implementation and generally do not see the full fruits of the proposed work.

Recently however I was able to work with a client, first in resolving critical performance issues and then in a review of the application architecture and MySQL environment, provide recommendations and also helping internal resources in the successful implementation. The result was a very successful engagement and an ideal case study on a strategy for tackling improving performance of an application using MySQL.

With an existing environment that included a MySQL master, 3 database slaves and 6 web servers this application provided the grounds of a well sized configuration and the need for greater availability and scalability.

The Call for Papers for the 2010 MySQL conference is still open. If you would like to share your experiences with MySQL submit your talk today.
