Understanding the Oslo Libraries

Underpinning all of the OpenStack projects including Nova, Cinder, Keystone, Glance, Horizon, Heat, Trove, Murano and others is a set of core common libraries that provide a consistent, highly tested and compatible feature set. The Oslo project is a collection of over 30 libraries that are designed to reduce the technical debt of code duplication across projects and provide for a greater quality code path due to the frequency of use in OpenStack projects.

These libraries provide a variety of different features from the more commonly used functionality found in projects including configuration, logging, caching, messaging and database management to more specific features like deprecation management, handling plugins as well as frameworks for command line programs and state machines. The Oslo Python libraries are designed to be Python 2.7 and Python 3.4 compatible, leading the way in migration towards Python 3.

The first stable Oslo library oslo.config was included in the Grizzly release. Now over 30 libraries comprise the Oslo project. These libraries fall into a number of broad categories.

1. Stable OpenStack specific libraries

These libraries, using the olso. prefix are generally well described the library name.

2. Python libraries that can easily operate with other projects

In addition to the oslo namespace libraries, Oslo has a number of generically named libraries that are not OpenStack specific. The goal is that these libraries can be utilized outside of OpenStack by any Python project. These include:

  • automaton – a framework for building state machines.
  • cliff – a framework for building command line programs.
  • debtcollector – a collection of python patterns that help you collect your technical debt in a non-destructive manner (following deprecation patterns and strategies and so-on).
  • futurist – a collection of async functionality and additions from the future.
  • osprofiler – an OpenStack cross-project profiling library.
  • hacking – a library that provides a set of tools for enforcing coding style guidelines.
  • pbr – (or Python Build Reasonableness) is a add-on library that helps provide (and enforce) a set of sensible default setuptools behaviours.
  • pyCADF – a python implementation of the DMTF Cloud Audit (CADF) data model.
  • stevedore – a library for managing plugins for Python applications.
  • taskflow – a library that helps create applications that handle state/failures… in a reasonable manner.
  • tooz – a library that aims at centralizing the most common distributed primitives like group membership protocol, lock service and leader election

3. Convenience libraries

There are also several libraries that are used during the creation of, or support of OpenStack libraries.

The first was oslo-incubator where as the name suggests, initial libraries were incubated. As this code matured it was refactored into standard libraries. Projects have either graduated, been incorporated elsewhere or been deprecated. While the Oslo Incubator has been removed of libraries in Mitaka, one of the goals of the Newton cycle is to see the adoption of Oslo libraries in all projects. We will be providing a series of blogs to detail the walkthrough and reviews of existing projects for reference.

Other libraries include:

  • oslosphinx is a sphinx add-on library that provides theme and extension support for generating documentation with Sphinx. The Developer Documentation, Release Notes, a number of the OpenStack manuals including the Configuration Reference and now the Nova API Reference rely on this library.

  • oslotest is a helper library that provides base classes and fixtures for creating unit and functional tests.
  • oslo-cookiecutter is a project that creates a skeleton Oslo library from a set of templates.

4. Proposed or deprecated libraries

Some libraries fall outside of these categories, such as oslo.rootwrap. This was a mature library for handling fine filtering of shell commands to run as root. This is now deprecated in favor of oslo.privsep which is a mechanism for running selected python code with elevated privileges.

pylockfile is a legacy (and adopted) inter-process lock management library that was never used within OpenStack.

The oslo.version is an example of a proposed library at present to help in using python metadata to determine versioning.

The Oslo team is also evaluating what other common code may be suitable for an Oslo library.

The meaning behind the Oslo Name

Each OpenStack project has some reason behind the name. Oslo is in reference to the Oslo Peace Accords and “bringing peace” to the OpenStack project.

Oslo is also the capital of Norway, and in Norway you can find Moose. The moose is our project mascot.

Installing MySQL on Oracle Enterprise Linux

One of the significant benefits of MySQL is it’s ease of use. Generally already installed on most Linux systems, MySQL can be installed by a single command if not yet present. On Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.4 you can use the following commands to check for MySQL, configure your yum repository and install MySQL.

# Check if already installed
$ rpm -qa | grep -i mysql

# Configure yum repository on new server
$ su -
$ cd /tmp
$ wget http://public-yum.oracle.com/public-yum-el5.repo
$ sed -e "s/enabled=0/enabled=1/" public-yum-el5.repo > /etc/yum.repos.d/public-yum-el5.repo

# Install MySQL
$ yum install -y mysql-server mysql

# Start and test MySQL Instance
$ /etc/init.d/mysqld start
$ mysql -uroot -e "SELECT VERSION()"

You can find more information about the Oracle public yum repository at http://public-yum.oracle.com You will also note that the version installed is 5.0. The current GA version of MySQL is 5.1, however Red Hat is notorious for taking time to update repositories more regularly. You can always use more current rpm files available at the MySQL downloads page.

If you want MySQL to be configured to automatically start and stop on your server you need to run the following command.

$ chkconfig mysqld on
$ chkconfig --list mysqld
mysqld          0:off   1:off   2:on    3:on    4:on    5:on    6:off

State of phpMyAdmin – FOSDEM 2010

Following the opening keynote “Dolphins, now and beyond”, Marc Delisle presented on “State of phpMyAdmin”.

phpMyAdmin is an DBA administration tool for MySQL available today in 57 different languages. This is found today in many distributions, LAMP stack products and also in cpanel. The product is found at http://phpmyadmin.net.

There are current two versions, the legacy 2.x version to support older php 3.x & 4.x, The current version 3.x is for PHP 5.2 or greater.

The current UI includes some new features including.

  • calendar input for date fields
  • meta data for mime types e.g images, which is great for showing the output as an image, otherwise blob data
  • Relational designer with the able to show and create foreign keys

The New features in 3.3 (currently in beta) include:

  • Replication support including configuring master/slave, start/stop slave.
  • Synchronization model showing structure and data differences between two servers and ability to sync.
  • New export to php array, xslx, mediawiki, new importing features including progress bar.
  • Changes tracking for changes on per instance or per table. Providing change report and export options.

UltimateLAMP

As I discussed earlier in A picture can tell a thousand words, I outlined briefly what the intention of UltimateLAMP was for. Let me spill the beans so to speak.

What is UltimateLAMP?

UltimateLAMP is a fully functional environment allowing you to easily try and evaluate a number of LAMP stack software products without requiring any specific setup or configuration of these products. UltimateLAMP runs as a Virtual Machine with VMware Player (FREE). This demonstration package also enables the recording of all user entered information for later reference, indeed you will find a wealth of information already available within a number of the Product Recommendations starting with the supplied Documentation.

My executive punch line with the “right” buzz words is:

What are the uses for UltimateLAMP?







Well, in a nutshell UltimateLAMP allows for instant exposure of Open Source products that use MySQL. You have to remember my goal here is to promote MySQL. Unfortunately, as with any database the features alone will not get the new sale, it’s the applicability to an organisation, and with Open Source the wealth of existing and developing applications that exist can. I don’t necessarily like this approach. Indeed many open source products are poorly designed and can be poor choices in a large scale enterprise solution, but the flip side is, where else can you start.

The benefits of selling a MediaWiki for example due to the success and scalability with Wikipedia is great. So it’s important that the product list includes proven products and currently developing products (rather then stale ones). This is something that the community can definitely provide valuable feedback on to help in this selection.

Other then becoming a CD used as a drink coaster, I feel the potential is here already to provide a copy to people, even install it on a managers computer. You can’t break the software, so why not install it for your non-computer user friends/family. The goal is to move up to executive management however I feel the exposure to the general community first will greatly help.

How it came about

There is some history to this idea. Here are some of the highlights.

  • Late 2005, several planning sessions with Jon and Morgan about a more practical Open Source Contribution user group lead to obviously LAMP stack products for simplicity and exposure. This lead to exposure of LAMP stack products to more of the general person and split from the original intended goal, but was a great idea.
  • Early 2006, futher discussions of how MySQL could get exposure and traction into organisations. For myself professional, how could I promote in industry sectors that I work in.
  • In April 2006, the MySQL Users Conference with discussions of this idea with others and the positive feedback
  • In May 2006, the VMware Appliance Challenge was the possible exposure and deadline needed for me to “Just Do It”. Originally the idea was intended as a Live CD, but in some ways a virtual machine is just as good.

Where to from now!

Well, supply and demand. I don’t know if anybody else has a particular use, or will even download to use it, or market it.

I could see the potential for MySQL User Groups to get behind my idea, and enable members to filter this into known organisations. I could see for targeted opportunities/events, CD’s or information could be distributed. With the support and backing of MySQL AB, I could see the opportunity for even a breakfast CEO/CTI/CIO introduction or other format of meeting the ultimate intended audience.

I could see the potential that an organisation or entity could provide free hosting (30 days) to an organisation that pointed a 3rd level domain to the provider (e.g. wiki.acme.com). It’s like the honeypot, if it takes off after 30 days, the company will either want to pay for hosting, or what to move it. And that’s also fine, organisation provides a MySQL dump, and links to documented installation instructions, or perhaps a sale of services for initial installation/customisation/training can be made.

What can I do?

There is always a list of things that can be done. For now the greatest thing I can ask for is feedback. The good, the bad and the ugly. It’s find to get the comments to say, “That’s great”, or “Good job” or “I can use this”, it’s just as important to get the comments that are proactive in what’s not good. I would value any feedback. On my immediate ToDo List or even partially complete is:

  • Document VMPlayer installation instructions for Windows/Linux (partial).
  • Add more product sample content.
  • Add more mediawiki content about the product, like customisation options, references to specific documentation, or other online working examples.
  • Documenting the installation/creation instructions for individual products.
  • Figure out a better way for users to contribute content that get’s rolled back into the Virtual Machines. For the mediawiki, I could see a public online copy, but for other products it could become harder
  • Optimise VM image (removing unnecessary OS stuff), removing product language support (not ideal), but my goal is to provide a 2 CD pack. The first CD has VMplayer in Win/Linux/RPM formats and the default VMware BrowserAppliance (All software from VMWare). The second CD is UltimateLAMP. Combined in a DVD 2x case along with perhaps a small booklet of a few pages, would enable this product to potential move to a commercial state.
  • Investigating other products
