Percona Ireland??

Anybody else noticed that Percona appears to not be a US entity any more?

I observed it today.

  1. Dr J. says

    Ireland is known for very low taxes.

    Google, Microsoft etc are selling all over Europe, however ships all the money to Ireland for low taxes. Some countries are becoming feed up and want to change this shit.

  2. Marc says

    Jonathan: yeah, this is all about taxes (much lower in IRL, 12.5%) and avoiding it in US. But hey, id they are European now — why there is no information about cookies?:-)

  3. Dermot says

    Ireland doesn’t get the tax revenue, either. They use the difference of tax laws in the US and Ireland to route money to the Bahamas and other places. It’s called a “Double Irish” or a “Dutch Sandwich” and Wikipedia describes it like this;

    “The strategy uses payments between related entities in a corporate structure to shift income from a higher-tax country to a lower-tax country. It relies on the fact that Irish tax law does not include U.S. transfer pricing rules. Specifically, Ireland uses territorial taxation, and hence does not levy taxes on income booked at subsidiaries of Irish companies that are outside of the state.”

    As the ultimate beneficiary is a Cayman Islands company (probably), it is outside the Irish tax jurisdiction, so they use US transfer pricing rules to avoid US taxes and the offshore rules in Ireland to avoid Irish taxes. Most of the big players actually have sizable operations in Ireland, but Percona just seems to have a name plate somewhere.
