The bad news: You all are right - the manual for installation was written by a mental defective and the process itself sheer torture.
The good news: Verizon's phone people are super for the most part; they really try to help.
More bad news: Though I'm programmed never to have the Mi-Fi sleep, it does so after 4 to 15 minutes - maddening! How do I get it to reconnect? Turn on my iPod Touch. Sounds crazy, but that's the truth.

Another issue is creating the Verizon account to pay your bill and track your usage. The process starts with trying to register for the account, at which time the system tells you it is going to send a temporary password to you via that cell number that you discovered was nestled deep in the paperwork... but unfortunately if you only got the MIFI access you DO NOT HAVE a cell phone from Verizon, so you cannot receive the temp password!!! So, somehow, the automated system can figure out that you did not get the temp password... and it sends you one via snail mail, which - when it arrived - also did not get me into the account... bummer. Still waiting to resolve this annoyance....

Thanks for the post! I'm having the exact same problem, but I'm only at point #7 (and Verizon keeps hanging up on my because I don't have my receipt with my new 'number')...still at the office, because that's the only place I have internet. Can go back home and get my number...but then no internet access!

Urggg! Why does it have to be so hard!?

Had similar frustrations and didn't really want to install all that crap on my Mac. Now that it's activated, I have to figure out a way to cleanly uninstall it. I can just use the thing using wifi now.

But another frustration -- it says that the vz software is only needed for activation. I plugged it into a USB port on another Mac and no new network interface pops up, so it looks like it's NOT usable via USB unless the software is installed. :-(
